JUROR'S STATEMENT

Eric WiegardtThank you for bestowing upon me the honor of being your judge for this show. It can be a rather humbling experience as there are so many strong paintings in a show of this caliber.

As always, I select those paintings that exhibit an understanding of design, i.e. excellent shape construction and value distribution. Regardless of subject matter, these paintings catch the eye and read excellence from across a room.

Secondly, I look for a facility of the medium and a respect for the time-honored discipline of painting. For example, the colors should be clean and not muddy, both in the light and shadows. Are the strokes confidently placed? Is the artist using the unique characteristics inherit to the medium, as in edge quality? There should be a consistency of interpretation. Are the foundations of drawing upheld, either in the form of realism or thoughtful distortion?

Lastly, I look for those that have the courage and ability to express themselves. I try to honor those who are willing to put themselves out on a limb, to risk acceptance for the sake of personal expression, and appear to enjoy the heat of battle this unique medium offers. Style has nothing to do with this, the paintings can be loose, or very tightly rendered. Expressive and disciplined draftsmanship, without the aid of projection, causes me to take notice.

Thank you and Keep Your Brush Wet!

BEST IN SHOW

BILL JAMES

What an honor it is to win this distinguished award. What makes this one special is that it was presented by such a well known and competent artist such as Eric. To be given this high award in this situation gives it more meaning and justifies the the feeling I had of it's success. I would also like thank Geri and everyone who put such a wonderful show as this one together - they do this year after year! I always enjoy entering. Thank you again for presenting me with such a prestigious award.

GOLD AWARD

Strained Mussels

JUDY MERCER

When I got "the call", I was, at once, honored, humbled, stunned and nearly speechless. I want to express my sincere appreciation to the judge, Eric Wiegardt, for his consideration of my painting "Strained Mussels" to receive this wonderful award. To be accepted into this highly regarded and very competitive exhibition is quite an honor, to receive an award is simply breathtaking.
Thank you, Southern Watercolor Society and the entire show committee. Thank you all.
Judy Mercer

BRONZE AWARD

Beneath the Surface XV

GWENDOLYN BRAGG

Having Eric Wiegardt select my painting "Beneath the Surface XV" to receive the bronze metal is both a great pleasure and a great honor. I'm sure that you could tell from my reaction to your telephone call informing me of the award that it was also extremely exciting! My feeling now is a bit like the painting itself - the bubbling water frothing over stones is something that passes on, but the stones themselves endure, and I know that the pleasure and satisfaction of being thus honored will endure long after my initial exuberance has settled down. I'm sorry previous plans do not permit me to accept the award in person. Please convey my appreciation and best wishes for a very successful show to all of those involved in the planning and execution of this 34th Annual Exhibition with a special thank you to Mr. Wiegardt -- the best judge ever!
Regards
Gwen
