Southern Watercolor Workshop
"Light Up Your Watercolors...Layer by Layer"

Linda L. Moyer

Feb. 25—29, 2008
Gadsden Arts Center, Quincy. Florida

How exciting it is, and how fortunate we are to be able to welcome Linda Moyer as our instructor and juror for the

Southern Watercolor Society’s 31st Annual Exhibition

at the outstanding Gadsden Arts Center in Quincy, Florida. Linda comes to us with an astounding resume and a world of experience.
A thorough knowledge of color is essential to the painter, and it is mandatory in the transparent watercolor layering process that Linda uses to create her paintings. This workshop will consist of an intensive focus on seeing and using color; will range in subject from on-site landscapes to artist’s personal photo images; lectures; slide shows and assignments that will aid the participants in implementing the concepts learned.
Check out her web site, mark off Feb 25—29, 2008 on your calendar, and begin planning your trip to North Florida! More detailed information will follow in the prospectus.
One thing that you should know about the workshop:
"I do very little demonstrating. I know that students expect this. The
process that I use doesn't lend itself to doing a complete demonstration.
For my own paintings, I might spend an entire day just painting in yellow
shapes. I do have a series of progressives that I will show the students and
will paint a little on each one of these."
More from Linda: "Yes, the above is a description of my workshop. The color review
includes information that most watercolors don't know (at least a few
things). The reason I stress color theory is because it is fundamental
to my process of layering. I begin with this review so that all of us
can have the same vocabulary and "start on the first page"). The review
usually takes about an hour (depending on the questions from the
students)."

The Workshop itself:
"The workshop consists of an intensive focus on color with lectures,
slide shows and assignments which will aid the participants in implementing
the concepts learned. The subject matter in the workshop will range from
on-site landscape (weather permitting) and still-life to photographs that
the students may bring.
"What are muddy colors? How do I avoid them? What are the three
properties of color? Why should I know what complementary colors are? How do
you stack colors as well as values in transparent watercolor? A thorough
knowledge of color is essential to the painter and it is mandatory in the
layering process of transparent watercolor. At the end of a workshop, one
student commented, 'I will never see color in quite the same way again.' "

About her work:
"The content of my work can be summarized as the affirmation of the
sacredness of life. The light depicted symbolizes the presence of the
creator in the created. My obsession with light began as a very young child
and is the essence of my work.
"I work in series, exploring various compositional devices related to a
given subject matter. The number of paintings in a series has varied from
six to thirty-seven different pieces. I use an extensive process of color
layering to obtain the quality of light that defines my works."
