ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

What forces shape an artist? For Guy, it is an incubation of experiences, lifetime fascination with the work of visual artists, and more than twenty-five years of study and effort. And the effort continues, his work having changed from recolonizable, predictable forms to improvisational efforts whose unexpected outcomes provide the emotional energy to continue his approach to painting.

Guy earned his B.S. degree from the University of South Carolina and has studied at workshops worldwide. He has exhibited in more than forty one-man shows across the Southeast. His work has been accepted into more than 150 national, open juried shows. In 1993, he published Watercolor: Go with the Flow, a book that was well-received across the country.

Guy, who has taught workshops and judged shows, also co-founded the South Carolina Watercolor Society. His honors include the Elizabeth O'Neil Verner Award for individual contributions to the arts of South Carolina and an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy from the University of South Carolina.

ARTIST STATEMENT

1 am driven to create visual art by the desire to express my reaction to the myriad of experiences, thoughts and observations of my life; like it or not, every effort is in some way an approach to an autobiography. Creating personal realism is exciting, and 1 often work in this way but nonrepresentational abstracts have great appeal and challenge. Believing that abstract art is a form of visual poetry, even visual music and certainly a stimulator of the imagination, 1 am pulled constantly in trying to solve the problems of this challenging way to express my feelings and thoughts, always hoping my audience will see the work around us with a new point of view.
