I have always loved to paint portraits and find people to be the most intriguing and interesting of subjects. This portrait was accepted into the 2004 Great Eight Exhibition and shown at the Wichita Art Museum that summer. I will work from photographs and/or life. My fees average around $600." - When I grew up being an artist seemed to be a self-indulgent and whimsical choice of careers. So for many years I was a very sensible, practical accountant until I realized people get paid for doing the fun things too. I finally got around to the fun things. I'm grateful for this time in my life.
My paintings are transparent watercolor which means the whites are just white paper left untouched. Sounds easy, doesn't it? The hills and creeks of southwestern Missouri where I grew up provide me with ever changing light and seasons, but just as I love the countryside, I also love the city. The old buildings and homes, the people and sounds have provided inspiration for paintings of a few of our jazz musicians and the historic jazz district of Kansas City. I also have a deep love for the canyons and people of our great Southwestern states.
- Painting has taught me a new way to see things. I've learned to pay closer attention and I'm liking what I see. I wish the same for you. Thanks for taking the time to read my message and to see my work. Marilyn York

- Sometimes we escape to our roots, Southern Missouri, where the creeks are crystal clear.
- One summer we watched the comings and goings of a family of ducks.
- These are those ducks going home.

- Each winter the buildings on the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City are outlined with thousands of lights. However, in February the sunlight on the bare limbs of this beautiful white tree and the resulting shadows cast on the buildings and awnings took my breath away.
