-
- Biography
- Mary is a
native of Laredo, Texas, a border community with
Mexico, her own heritage and the vibrant colors of
this unique culture explode in her work. In 1977,
after painting in oils and acrylics for 7 years, Mary
found fluidity of expression in watercolor. Though she
often mixes other media, she states that there is such
a harmony between watercolor and the creative process,
that it is a joy to work with it. Mary's eyes are her
art. She draws from the small blossom, the obscure
window and the silence of a silhouette. The observer
finds a lively, energetic color that is most unusual
in the watercolor medium.
-
Mary has been
accepted into juried shows both in Texas, Colorado,
South Carolina, Missouri and Kansas. She also had the
opportunity to show one of her watercolor pieces at
the Contemporary Museum of Modern Art in Nigata,
Japan, and received the Award of Excellence. She has
been featured in the Texas Watercolor Society
publication "Fifty Years of Excellence" and the summer
edition of Watercolor Magazine, both 1999 editions.
The Laredo Center for the Arts exhibited her works in
a "one woman" show in 1998 and 2002. In 2003 Mary was
juried into the 13th edition of the "Encyclopedia of
Living Artists" in America. Another work, "Mariposas"
was juried into a North Light Book for artists
entitled "Splash 8" to be released in October of 2004.

- ARTISTS'
STATEMENT, MARY QUIROS
-
- Having
studied and been influenced by various teaching
masters, I find I am inspired by the nature, form and
music of my world. Traveling has opened a variety of
new experiences that have found their expression in my
work. Watercolor is a great joy for me. Time spent in
reflection allows me to draw on what lies hidden in my
subconscious and I strive to show in my work that
watercolor can be bold, full of drama as well as fun.
I have found that water media has endless
possibilities by using different methods of
interpretation. Experimentation with ink and wash,
collage, and dry brush allows me plenty of flexibility
in the creative process of developing a work of
art.
